Mouy Thai ( Thai boxing )

Muay Thai, translated into English as Thai Boxing, is the national sport of Thailand and is a martial art with origins in the ancient battlefield tactics of the Siamese (or Thai) army. It evolved from Krabi-Krabong, literally sword and baton, the hand-to-hand tactics of the Thai army. The early Muay Thai bouts pitted different companies within the Siamese army against each other with few rules and no weight divisions or time limits. They became quite popular and eventually were shown in stadia across the country. In the early 20th century, time limits, boxing gloves as well as a uniform set of rules were introduced. During the latter half of the 20th century Muay Thai was exported to many countries and is now practiced by hundreds of thousands of people all over the world.

Muay Thai is known as "King of the Ring" in kickboxing circles. These fights feature punches, kicks, elbows, knees, standing grappling and head-butts to wear down and knock out their opponent. Thai training methods develop devastating power, speed and superb cardio-vascular endurance as well as fighting spirit. Muay Thai training as also quite safe thanks to sophisticated pad training that evolved to keep fighters healthy between fights. Muay Thai has also proven very effective outside the ring and has been embraced enthusiastically by practitioners of a variety of self-defense, sporting, military and law enforcement activities.

Loi Kratong Festival

One of the most beautiful festivals that takes place in Thailand is the one for Loy Krathong.

This is celebrated on the full moon in November. The word loy means to float, and a krathong is a banana leaf cup. People place a candle and incense sticks in their krathongs and then float them on a local river or pond. As they push away their krathong, they ask for forgiveness in polluting the waterways and also for good luck in the coming months.

Songkran Festival

Joyful Songkran festivalDue to our hot politic, this April seems to be hotter than last year. Luckily, the pleasant Songkran festival comes to alleviate our hot situation.

Not only Thailand held this festival but also Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Sibsongpanna State in China and Srilanka. The word “Songkran” means move or change so this festival is the period that the sun moves close to our earth and all southeastern people regard this time as their new year. Moreover, this period is also the harvest season.

India is the first country holding this festival before the end of the year but there wasn’t water war as today. After this festival spread over the Asia, water started to play the vital role in celebration, being the symbol of richness. There are three days for this festival :

First day is called Songkran day, the last day of the year. People will clean their home to welcome the coming new year.

Second day is Wan Nao. People will bathe the Buddha image and all children will Rod-nam-dum-hua (pour water on the hands of revered elders and ask for blessing) their parents. Furthermore, they believed that saying the rough word on that day will bring the bad luck.

The last is Payawan Day, the beginning day of New Year. People will make merit for their happiness. In the north, they will bring a timber to prop the big tree for their long life. All male and female teenagers will water each other for removing all bad things. This is only one day that they will meet each other, doing activities at the temple together.

Now this belief is still visible only in the up-country because most people put more importance on water war. Cold water and ice replace Num-ob (Thai perfume). Powder and …. are new Songkran charm. Water war at Kao Sarn Road in Bangkok, Road around Chiangmai moat, Kao Nheaw Road in Khon kaen reflex new Thai Songkarn lifestyle.

Change can happen everywhere, it isn’t wrong. It is inevitable. It is the way the world turns. For some it’s good for it’s not. Still this festival is remains wonderful roots and charm.

long live the king

His Majesty King Bhumibol of Thailand is known as the working monarch of the world. He visits the remote areas all over the country to listen to the villager's problems and tries to improve their livelihood through various methords and the Royal Projects.
For His Majesty, the people come first. The people's well-being has to be the first and this goes beyond public pledges or commitments.
"We will reign with righteousness, for the benefits and happiness of the Siamese peoples"
Those are the traditional words pronounced by each Thai King on the day of his accession to the Throne. Although seemingly simple enough in content yet those words reflect very well the essence of kingship which has developed through the long and varying history of the Thai nation. That history is marked by two outstanding features :
Thailand, also known for a long period as Siam, has always managed to retain its independence while nations all around fell prey at once time or another to colonialist powers, and Thailand has always had a King on the Throne as the nation's leader. It is therefore not surprising that the two features are often held as being intertwined, which makes the study of the function of the Thai Throne all the more vital to a biographical sketch of any Thai King.
On His Majesty the King's birthday on Deccember 5, the day when all Thais direct their thought towards the one person who is the focal point of love and repect, Donmuang Homepage joins the whole nation in wishing His Majesty a very happy birthday and long healthy life.

Koh Chang

Koh Chang has always been a favourite get-away for Thai people. Lush and mountainous, this quiet island, full of natural treasures is a jewel just waiting to be discovered.

Only 360 kilometres from Bangkok, Koh Chang is an island paradise with pristine forests and rich marine life. The largest of 47 islands off the coast of Trat province, its seeming inaccessibility means that the island has been largely overlooked by visitors, making it a true island get- away. However, an excellent road from Bangkok and a new flight to Trat airport, have meant that the destination is now starting to get the attention that it deserves.

Mountainous Koh Chang has an undisturbed interior of dense tropical rain forest, home to many species including macaque monkeys, barking deer and wild pig. Trekkers can also expect to see more than 70 species of bird. Koh Chang and the islands in this chain were awarded Marine National Park status in 1982 to ensure that this pristine environment is preserved.
Whilst exploring the jungle is a possibility, the less energetic who simply want to relax on the beach won't be disappointed! The whole of the western side of the island has white sand beaches, which stretch as far as the eye can see.

Charmingly Simple
Largely untouched, Koh Chang is an unsophisticated island which remains unaffected by the modern world. The original inhabitants of Koh Chang (Khon Kard) still live traditionally, surviving mainly from an income of fishing, supplemented by growing fruit and rubber. There are still fishing communities on the island where rain or shine the fisherman take the boats out. At night you can see the lights on the horizon from the fishing boats catching squid.

Chao Po Koh Chang
(the Godfather of Koh Chang)
This Chinese style shrine in the north of the island, with two huge elephants guarding the entrance, has been a saviour to the Khon Kard for generations. Throughout the history of the island, when the fishermen found themselves facing a strong monsoon or a poor harvest, they would seek guidance from the Chao Po Koh Chang. Island folklore records amazing stories of answered prayers when people have asked for help at the shrine.

Local History and Traditions
An important part of the island's history took place at the Naval Battle Ground (Boriwaen Yutthanavee). It was here that the French and Thai navy clashed during the height of the French colonization of Indochina. This culminated in a battle on 17th January 1921, when the Royal Thai Navy's ship, "Thonburi" was sunk.

A museum has been built on Laem Ngnob Beach, on the mainland, with an exhibition of Koh Chang's naval history on display. On top of the building is a statue of Krom Luang Chumpon Khet Udomsak, a key figure in the battle, with his face turned to look at Koh Chang. Every year, the people of Trat province hold memorial services from the 17th to 21st of January, floating garlands in the sea, to honour those who perished. The actual battle was near Ao Salak Petch and the wreck is now a popular dive site.
